- Fundamental Food Safety Training for Food Handler
All food businesses have a responsibility to ensure that food is handled safely in accordance with the Food Act 2001. This is important to reduce the likelihood of foodborne illnesses and outbreaks which can lead to long term health effects and even death.
A food poisoning outbreak could be devastating for your business. Therefore, it is important to ensure your staff have a good understanding of the principles of food safety and apply them in the food business.
To assist food businesses with their training needs, Eastern Health Authority has developed a basic Food Safety Training session aimed at educating food handlers on the fundamental principles of food safety.
The main topics covered in the training session include but are not limited to:
- legislative requirements
- food safety hazards
- safe storage practices
- processing (e.g. 2 hour/4 hour rule & cooling requirements)
- hygiene requirements
Free Food Safety Training sessions are available throughout the year for Food Businesses operating within EHA Council Areas.
Eastern Health Authority will be hosting the next Food Safety Training session in May 2025.
These sessions are free to our notified businesses and are designed to introduce basic food handling principles to food handlers.
Registrations will open closer to the date.
Registrations are essential as spaces are limited.
Please be advised that if you are not from a notified food business within Eastern Health Authority’s constituent Council Area a small training fee is applicable. If your business or organisation would like one on one Food Safety Training, please enquire about costs via 8132 3600.

Food Safety Supervisors Training
In addition to basic food handler training, businesses captured under Standard 3.2.2A are required to have a food safety supervisor (FSS) who has undertaken accredited training from an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within the last 5 years.
The Fundamental Food Safety Training hosted by EHA is intended to introduce basic food safety principles to food handlers (e.g. food safety hazards, temperature control, food storage, hygiene of food handlers etc.) only and is not a Food Safety Supervisors Training course.
