- Replace the Waste
From 1 September 2024 another single use plastic ban step will be introduced and is likely to have the biggest impact on businesses, especially food businesses.
Items to be banned include:
- Most single use plastic take away containers, to be replaced with compostable containers and lids. Please note various exemptions apply and refer to the Replace the Waste website for further information.
- Single use plastic beverage and takeaway coffee cups (including lids)
- Thick supermarket or boutique style plastic bags
- Plastic barrier bags (produce bags)
- Expanded polystyrene (EPS) food containers, including EPS gelato containers, cake boxes and trays used for meat, fruit and other food items
- Plastic food (bread) bag tags (for bags weighing under 2kg)
- Plastic confetti
It is important to note there will be no grace period for the sale, supply and distribution of banned items, except where an exemption applies. Therefore, businesses will need to be aware and preparing now to transition to alternative packaging by the 1 September 2024.
By avoiding waste and shifting to reusable or recyclable options, we can ensure the best environmental outcome for our 'clean and green' state.
Since 1 March 2021 South Australia is taking a phased approach to banning single-use and other plastic products, enabling all South Australians to replace the waste by avoiding single-use plastics and adopting 'clean and green' alternatives.
For a full comprehensive list of the new and previously banned single plastic items and for further information including contact details should you have any enquiries, please refer to the Replace the Waste website.
